Help us Save the Hedgehog!

It has been reported that Hedgehog numbers have plummeted by more than half  since the year 2000.  Although it is difficult to pinpoint exact numbers, largely due to their  nocturnal and solitary nature, there is certainly a worrying trend indicating the demise of the nations favourite prickly mammal.

The trend seems to indicate that Hedgehogs now prefer suburban habitats and can be entirely absent from rural areas. Areas in and around towns and villages are excellent habitats for Hedgehogs and Hedgehogs often prefer them over farmland .

Britains gardens are however becoming  poorer homes for wildlife with increased hard landscaping and reduced plant life. Alongside this an increase in housing developments and more roads being built are contributing to a huge loss of connectivity between greenspaces, leaving Hedgehogs isolated. Fencing also plays a large part in this. Hedgehogs find it difficult to roam when gardens are completely segregated by fencing.

Stockport Fencing Ltd are keen to promote Hedgehog friendly fencing by producing concrete base panels that are pre-cast with a ‘Hedgehog hole’. These holes allow free movement of Hedgehogs within our gardens. Just one hedgehog friendly gravel board on each side boundary is enough to give the freedom they require.  We hope that creating these hedgehog highways will provide the opportunity for hedgehogs to roam freely between gardens to forage for food and potentially find a mate.

Hedgehog friendly fencing can be placed in a corner of your garden or positioned behind plants or shrubs to be almost invisible.
